The I-House Connection: March 2022

The I-House Connection: News from International House at UC Berkeley
March 18, 2022

Dear Alumni and Friends,

As the I-House community prepares to enjoy the vernal equinox and the beginning of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere this Sunday - and our residents look forward to Spring Recess next week - we’ve enjoyed a renewed calendar of events here in the House.  This week we’ve had a Spanish Coffee Hour, a Saint Patrick’s Scavenger Hunt, and music once again filling the Great Hall.

In this issue of the I-House Connection, I’m delighted to announce the public opening of edmonds café at I-House after months of restoration! We honor the memory of Harry and Florence Edmonds, founders of the I-House movement, as we confer their name on one of I-House’s most cherished features.  Please come by and enjoy the restored café with us!

I’d also personally like to convey my thanks to all of you who participated in this year’s “Big Give” fundraising event.

I’m pleased to share an invitation to another virtual event hosted by I-House New York.  In celebration of Women’s History Month, I-House New York welcomes author Kati Marton for an insightful discussion on her recent book The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel

In these disturbing times, if you are looking for ways to donate to Ukrainian relief causes, a vetted list of organizations has been put together by the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies which can be found here, https://iseees.berkeley.edu/. The list includes organizations providing direct emergency relief efforts in Ukraine and surrounding areas.

Sincerely,

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

Carina SamsonHello everyone! My name is Carina Samson and I'm super excited for the opportunity to share the various diverse experiences and beautiful moments we have here at I-House with the rest of our Berkeley community!

A little bit about me: I was born in the Philippines and raised in Japan, and I'm currently a junior undergraduate student double majoring in Data Science and Psychology. Ever since I was really young I've been passionate about mental health, as well as a strong believer in the importance of service and youth empowerment, especially within the field of educational technology. In my free time, I love to write music, sing, play the ukulele, go on hikes and watch anime.

Jeanne BlochHi all! My name is Jeanne Bloch. I was born and raised in France and am currently a junior studying international law and political science. I am particularly interested in the study and protection of Human Rights. I've also been working in a newspaper for three years now!

I like living here, in such a rich cultural environment and would love to learn more from each one of our residents. In my free time, I enjoy any kind of sea-related activity (surfing, sailing, swimming) as well as writing in my journal and reading. I'm always up for a chat with residents and alumni, especially if you want to share your I-House stories and experiences!
