The I-House Connection: November 2022
November 17, 2022

Dear Alumni and Friends,

In this issue of the I-House Connection as we kick off our Fall Annual Appeal, I’d like to thank you and ask for your support.

Many of you have already given to I-House this year. Thank you! I-House continues to serve as a beacon for peace through intercultural understanding – because of generous friends and alumni like you.

If you have yet to give but believe in the continued magic of the I-House experience and in our vision of a more just and peaceful world, please make a gift to I-House now Your gift of any size will support life-changing room and board scholarships, barrier-breaking intercultural programming, and the continued care of our beautiful and historic building.

In this issue, I also would like to introduce our 2022-23 Resident Council Members, congratulate Roxanne Pifer for her many accomplishments and bid her farewell, welcome new staff, and invite you to join our vibrant online community if you haven’t already.  If you are in the area, please plan to visit and enjoy the World Cup at the Café!

Sincerely,

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

Meet the 2022-23 Resident Council Members

Resident Council members are community leaders who act as liaisons to the I-House Board of Directors, Administration, and the Center for Intercultural Leadership and Programs to help foster a safe and inclusive environment at I-House. The Resident Council's focus is to support the larger I-House mission and help prepare the next generation of global leaders for a more just and peaceful world.

Recently, our family hosted our first Sunday Supper at our home, harkening back to the tradition of Harry and Florence Edmonds before the first International House opened in 1924. We chose Thanksgiving (the act of expressing or feeling thankful) as the theme. I shared that we often take the important things in our life, such as friends, family, and health, for granted throughout the year. I asked each table to start the conversation by sharing what they are thankful for. It was a wonderful evening of food, drink, conversation, and friendships. I hope Harry and Florence Edmonds would be proud that we are continuing the tradition of bringing residents together in our home, as well as under the dome. In addition to the traditional Sunday Suppers at I-House, we plan to host another Sunday Supper at our home in the Spring to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Farewell and Thanks to Roxanne Pifer!

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director

Shaun Carver, I-House Executive Director with Roxanne Pifer, former Director of I-House OperationsRoxanne Pifer, Director of Housing Operations, has accepted a role as Director of Admissions and Diversity Recruitment in the School of Information on the UCB campus. While excited about Roxanne’s new opportunity, we are, of course, very sad to see her leave International House.

Roxanne came to I-House from the Environmental Science Department where she was a Student Service Advisor. In May 2017, she was promoted to the Assistant Director of Admissions where she oversaw admissions, all front desk and resident services, financial aid, and guidance to student leaders. By 2019, Roxanne became the Director of Admissions and Housing Operations where, along with admissions, she led Student Affairs, Resident Assistants, and Security Monitors. Roxanne was also instrumental in serving our community as our Coordinator for Special Housing Accommodations in support of residents with disabilities. Upon joining I-House in 2020, I was honored to have Roxanne as part of the senior leadership team as the Director of Housing Operations. Her knowledge of every aspect of I-House and campus operations was critical as we navigated new waters. Roxanne’s passion and commitment to I-House, our mission, and the residents and staff are unmatched.

We congratulate Roxanne on her new position, thank her for everything she has done in support of our mission, bid her farewell, and wish her good fortune as she begins a new chapter.
